For Allan and Sonia Richardson, it is all about passion. Passion for the area they farm, for their lifestyle and for producing top quality, beautifully presented organic meat.
The organic farm, Avalon, is found high in the rolling hills of West Otago where their naturally disease-resistant sheep and cattle enjoy lush, green grasses, fresh mountain air and live with minimal intervention and stress.
The livestock are raised in a healthier, more sustainable environment that safeguards groundwater as well as soil and plan biodiversity.
Initially developed from gorse and scrub by Allan’s father Colin, Allan and Sonia saw future possibilities with the land. They wanted to farm sustainably, allowing for opportunities for future generations and reflect the proud farming traditions Colin began.
Allan and Sonia began using organic methods in 1998 gaining AgriQuality organic certification in August 2001.
The whole production chain must be organic certified, starting with Avalon Farm, the processor and the master butcher, before we can label our meat ‘organic’.

This full organic certification and auditing provides you the customer with greater certainty and intensity about the products you are purchasing. The costs to do this are high but it is important to us that you receive the finest quality organic products backed by the internationally recognized Agriquality organic standard.
Allan and Sonia are now keen to share their knowledge of organic farming, helping farmers make a successful move into organic farming through their Avalon Farming™ and Avalon Genetics™ systems. The quality of the meat they produce certainly shows the value of the choices they have made.
Avalon Organic meat is free of antibiotics, genetically modified foods and other artificial drugs.
Beautifully aged, conditioned and prepared by a master gourmet butcher, Avalon Organic lamb, mutton and beef is ready to cook, with no preparation or extra trimming required.
